Family Sharing: How to join and sync data across devices

Below is step-by-step information on how to join and sync data across devices using Sprout Baby’s Family Sharing feature. The steps vary depending on whether you’re using iOS or Android devices.

If you don’t see these options in your app, please make sure you are using the latest version of Sprout Baby (iOS 14.0 or later). You can check this in More > Settings, at the bottom of the screen next to Version.


For Apple (iOS) devices:

1. Open the app and go to More > Family Sharing.
2. If you are the baby’s parent:
   a. Tap “Parent,” then tap “Generate a QR Code.”
   b. Have the family member install Sprout Baby on their device and open the app.
   c. From the Welcome screen, they should tap “Join a Family Member’s App.”
   d. Select that they are joining an iPhone or iPad.
   e. Tap the Camera button and scan the QR code from your device.

If you are not in the same location, you can also tap the Share button to send them a link they can tap to join your app.


For an Apple (iOS) device sharing with an Android device:

1. Open the app and go to More > Family Sharing.

2. If you are the baby’s parent:
   a. Tap “Parent,” then select “Use PIN (Android)” at the top of the screen.
   b. Share this PIN with the family member who is joining your app.
3. Have the family member install Sprout Baby on their Android device and open the app.
4. From the Welcome screen, they should tap “Join an App.”
5. Enter the child details and the PIN you shared.

If you have multiple child profiles, all child profiles must be added on the Android device and must match exactly, including spelling.

6. Tap “Join” to complete the process.


For an Android device sharing with another Android device:

1. Open the app and go to More > Settings.
2. Share the PIN shown next to “My PIN” with the family member joining your app.
3. On the other Android device, open the app and go to More > Settings > Sharing > Join & Sync Devices.
4. Enter the child details and the PIN you shared.

If multiple children are being tracked, the number of child profiles and all details must match exactly on both devices.


Troubleshooting:

For iOS:
QR codes expire after 1 hour. If the QR code has expired, please generate a new one.

For Android:
The most common issue when joining via PIN is that child profile details do not match exactly between devices, for example one device has a first name only while the other has a first and middle name.

To check child profile details:
- Tap the Child Selector in the top-right corner of the app.
- Tap “Edit” under each child profile and confirm the details match on all devices.

If one device is tracking multiple children, the other device must also have the same number of child profiles added before joining.


Purchasing the app:

At least one device must have purchased the app for Family Sharing to work. Once one device has purchased the app, other devices can join without purchasing again.

Once devices are successfully joined, you will see the same PIN listed in the app’s Settings on all connected devices.
